The establishment of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument has been a divisive issue in Maine, but one truth stands out–the land around Millinocket is some of the best in the state. Despite our Governor’s denigration of Millinocket as a “mosquito area,” I would rather be in the woods and waters around Katahdin than surrounded by a bunch of tourists in Boothbay Harbor.
As the days have become shorter, my fall trip to Millinocket with Max Polstein stands out. Max’s family owns New England Outdoor Center and we had the opportunity to bird hunt and hike throughout the area.
In addition to our shotguns, I brought along my trusty Mamiya 645–a medium format film camera. We ended up with more photos than birds. Here are some of the results:
